Coffee Outside in Winter

Coffee Outside in Winter
Jason Dewar

What images come to mind when you think about winter? For some, winter leisure means staying inside, maybe cuddling with a loved one and enjoying the warmth of a fire or of a big mug of tea to unwind from our earlier indoor activities. For Canadians, winter brings with it some of our favourite outdoor activities. Alpine and Nordic skiing, tobogganing, snowshoeing, shinny (hockey on a frozen pond), winter camping, and winter bike camping (it’s a thing, I swear!). Everyone knows how to brew coffee inside when the thermometer dips below zero, but beyond wearing layers, this is our guide for the best way to enjoy fresh brewed coffee outdoors in the cold.

Let’s start with the basics. Do NOT lick your Porlex in sub-zero temperatures! If you can build a fire, you can brew coffee. Boil your water in a kettle, grind up your coffee with your choice of portable grinder and brew it up however you like. We suggest an insulated travel press. If you can’t build a fire then get yourself a butane burner so you can brew coffee like McGyver! Bring along a Phoenix70 pour-over brewer and paper filter. Ideally you can bring some hot water in a thermos to limit the time it takes to boil the water. First, place the Phoenix70 over the butane burner and put your kettle on top to heat. When the water boils, place the Phoenix70 (careful it’s hot!) on top of a mug and start brewing with the following guide!
